Famous People From Miami

William Burdine (1845–1911): Founder of Burdines, a department store that became a staple in Miami.

William Burdine was born in 1845, and before moving to Florida, he served as a captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After the war, he ventured into retail, opening his first store in Bartow, Florida, in 1897.
